Columbus Day Event Features More Than 70 Artists
Discover a new world this Columbus Day weekend, October 11th and 12th, as more than fifty Abiquiu artists open their studios from 10 AM - 5 PM to friends, old and new, during one of the most beautiful times of the year in Northern New Mexico. The Abiquiu Studio Tour is a self-guided, driving tour that takes visitors and collectors through the village of Abiquiu and the surrounding Chama River Valley---a landscape of imposing mountains, spectacular rock formations, and the glorious rivers of the Piedra Lumbra basin. Complimentary maps are available at all the studios and local businesses. For further information visit this website every once in a while or call 505 685-4449.
Inhabited for centuries by Native Americans before and after the Spanish settled here in 1692, Abiquiu village is well-known internationally as the home of the renowned painter Georgia O'Keefe who made it her permanent home. A destination for visitors who come to tour her house in the village and visit nearby Ghost Ranch where she had a studio, the dramatic landscape that inspired her artistry has continued to attract a steadily growing community of traditional and contemporary artists.
On view will be a veritable timeline of arts and traditional crafts from the signature micaceous clay artworks of the region and Native American and Hispanic-inspired pottery, retablos, santos and furniture to contemporary paintings, sculpture, narrative and Southwestern works, photographs, jewelry, glass, ceramics, textiles, and wearable art.
The range and quality of the artworks, the spectacular landscape, and the welcoming atmosphere have made the Abiquiu Studio Tour one of the most well-attended and successful events of its kind. Experience the unique artistry of the region and explore the local color at this annual event. Abiquiu is located on US 84, about one hour's drive from Santa Fe or Taos.
The Abiquiu Studio Tour is open to all artists living in the Abiquiu area. The tour is proud to have kept its entry fee low so that all members in the community can participate. This is an unjuried event. It is a working tour in that all it's members participate in the activities that are necessary to make it successful for everyone. By working together we strive to develop a community that shows the pride and enthusiasm of all its members.
